Theoretical models, appropriate for considering whether or not cavities can be nucleated at discontinuities (e.g., second-phase particles) in grain boundaries during high-temperature creep, are analysed. It is concluded that experimental conditions are frequently such that cavities may be nucleated in this manner, and the implications of the conclusion are discussed in detail.
