Abstract
The research strategy followed at Volkswagen to increase the use of magnesium in cars includes new fields of application for the metal. The introduction of already developed and potential future magnesium components into the vehicle modules drive train, interior, body and chassis is described and analysed according to the time-frame and likelihood of realization. Research and development projects are discussed and the need for additional alloys with optimized properties is explained. Results of casting campaigns with the new family of creep-resistant Mg-alloys (MRI 15X) are presented.
