Consett, a small town in County Durham, is set within the northeast England coalfield, and its iron and steel plant was formerly reliant on the local supply of deepmined coal. The steelworks closed in 1980. Since then the environmental legacy of the works has been addressed through an ‘industrial ecology’ approach, the aims of which are to reuse the site for industrial purposes and so aid economic regeneration of the town.
