Abstract
This paper provides an overview of options for the geological disposal of nuclear fuel waste considered worldwide, but with emphasis on experience from Western Europe and North America. It includes discussion of disposal in plutonic and volcanic rocks, argillaceous sediments, evaporites, and unsaturated rocks. The paper ends with illustrations of the calculated performance and long term safety of geological disposal systems, and conclusions.
