‘Large numbers of those killed and injured by motor vehicles are pedestrians or pedal cyclists. Walking and cycling are also made uncomfortable and inconvenient by motor traffic.’ (See report discussed in Note 1, p. 4.) Professor Philippe Bernard, retired Chairman of the Social Sciences Division of the École Polytechnique, Paris, now heads Cyclo Trans-Europe, an association actively promoting a protected bikeway from Paris to Moscow.
