Abstract
Looking back over the past 50 years, science policy in the USA has varied from the ‘big science’ of the Manhattan Project and Apollo 11 and the consequent expansionist attitudes to the remedies now proposed for the recent critical response to science. The reasons for these changes are here analysed, the need to set priorities for the future is emphasised, and interdisciplinary research and international collaboration are recommended. It is concluded that the scientific community should seek closer integration with every aspect of society, education, work, public policy, environment, industry, and social welfare.
