Abstract
The place of domesticated animals, ranging from horses and cattle to silkworms, in human societies is here reviewed, as well as the feelings and attitudes of mankind towards them. Domestic animals and pets have been studied by three scientific disciplines, zoologists, archaeologists and applied scientists trying to adapt animals to human needs. A plea is made that a systematic and interdisciplinary approach to the study of domestication should be implemented, in which the human and social sciences, as well as zoology, animal genetics and the veterinary sciences, are given their rightful place.
