Abstract
A renewed plea for international cooperation between various associations for the advancement of science was made in two editorials in volume 12 (1987) of Interdisciplinary Science Reviews. These were followed by a preliminary meeting in Hanover in 1989, also organised by the Editor, where it was decided to proceed to set up an international union. A further meeting, organised by the British and the Hong Kong Associations, is now reported here. The federation will formally come into being on 1 November 1991.
