Abstract
Simulation as such is nothing new – for example, chess as simulated war. However, when learning theory was combined with modern technology and computing power, complex and highly efficient simulators became possible and very cost effective for both industry and the military services. This review considers the theoretical background to learning and training, as well as the design of simulators, and many examples are cited from the author's and his company's experience of successful and efficient applications of simulators.
