Abstract
The accelerating pace of research in neuropsychology in particular, and in neuroscience in general, has reopened discussion of perennial questions about the relation of mind and brain. Many of the findings point to an ever tightening link between mind and brain. At the same time, the nature of this link is far from understood. Trends in current research are reviewed in historical perspective, and some tentative conclusions and pointers to the future are offered. In particular, the crucial importance of an interdisciplinary research strategy is emphasised. This is illustrated by the converging research findings of neurobiologists, neuropsychologists, neurophysiologists, neurochemists and computer scientists. The neuroscience of mental health is one area of contemporary research which seems set to benefit considerably from such a sustained interdisciplinary approach.
