Abstract
Although the United States is the leading scientific nation in the world, there is much concern about the future, particularly about such matters as an adequate supply of young scientists, a wise allocation of existing and expanded resources, the provision of modern instruments and facilities, sensible management and regulation of science and the need to strengthen the relationship between academia, government and industry. To all these problems the author proposes solutions.
