Abstract
Cytokines, their receptors, and functionally ill-defined cell surface molecules involved in signal transduction across the membrane play an important role in controlling growth of normal and malignant lymphocytes. This review describes the function of several cytokines important for T-lymphocyte growth. These cytokines include T-cell cytotoxicity-inducing factor 1 (TCF1), interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 2 (IL-2), and interleukin 4 (IL-4). In addition, the review describes a new monoclonal antibody, anti-APO-1, directed against a cell surface protein (APO-1) on activated normal human lymphocytes and on cells of human malignant lymphocyte lines. Anti-APO-1 abrogates growth of APO-1–expressing cells and induces self-destruction of these cells by programmed cell death (apoptosis) in vitro and in vivo.
