Abstract
The German Ministry for Research and Technology has given high priority to basic research and has not hesitated to support large-scale research projects. The reasons for this policy are outlined and the Continental Deep Drilling Programme is cited as an outstanding example of the ministry's philosophy. The need for deep drilling, down to 30 km, is treated in some detail, as are the results to be expected. New technologies will have to be developed in the course of this programme, and these may find a commercial use.
