The Chaco region of Paraguay is a hostile and, until recently, virtually inaccessible area. Only 15 years ago a new species of peccary was identified there. Now, as a result of human population pressure and the building of a new road, the survival of the species is threatened. Prospects for its future, as well as the history of human settlements in the area, particularly by Mennonites, are discussed.
