Abstract
This wide-ranging review traces the tiger's pre-history and the geographic distribution of its eight subspecies as well as the tiger's mythological significance in Indian life. The difficulties of census and identification of individual tigers are discussed, and the history of Project Tiger is outlined. The present problem of protecting the tiger in one of its reserves in the face of the ever-increasing pressures of the human population explosion and the concomitant increase in the animal population is used to illustrate the greatest threat to the survival of the tiger into the next century. A list of local and national actions is presented that can assure the future existence of this famous animal in India.
