Abstract
The need for meteorological observations from satellites is explained and Europe's response, from the pre-operational Meteosat programme to the development of the continuing Eumetsat organization, is described. Plans for the next generation of satellites, in the 1990s, are reviewed, with comments on the direction and scope of the programme.
