The peaceful uses of outer space include both basic space research, with its notable contributions to geophysics, solar physics, planetology and astronomy, and practical space applications leading to operational systems serving national and international needs. This review discusses some of the practical applications of space technology with reference to three broad classes of spacecraft: communications satellites; meteorological and other Earth-sensing satellites; and navigation and search and rescue satellites.
