Abstract
Current knowledge about AIDS and its causative agent, the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, is briefly reviewed and considered as a global health problem. WHO is committed to a global strategy of prevention and control of HIV infection, and this strategy is here outlined. Future generations will judge us for the actions we take or fail to take during the next few years, the authors conclude.
