INMARSAT, the International Maritime Satellite Organisation, has made great progress since its foundation in 1965 and has now 44 members. Its three components, the satellites leased, the stations on land and those on ships, have grown with INMARSAT in size, number and efficiency, thus providing ever increasing communication services to the international maritime community. Research and future development are described which will make a significant contribution to the future global maritime distress and safety system. Finally, INMARSAT is now preparing to provide services to the aeronautical community, like those at present operative for maritime communications.
