Abstract
Chemicals will continue to be used in the foreseeable future to kill insects, or to modify their behaviour or development. For these purposes they may be used either alone or combined with biological methods in integrated control programmes. Much effort has been expended by industrial, government and university laboratories toward improving the species selectivity of chemicals and reducing their mammalian toxicity. The development of new insect control chemicals for present day needs requires the combination of chemical skills with a sound knowledge of insect biology and biochemistry.
