Abstract
It is now possible, starting from isolated cells in culture, to regenerate higher plants, including many of importance in agriculture and horticulture. It is also possible to alter the genetic equipment of such cells and to induce the formation of fusion hybrids from them by enzymic removal of their cell walls. From such altered cells and such hybrids new plants can be generated. These technical achievements open up new possibilities in plant breeding and in the exploitation of the chemical potentialities of higher plant cells.
