Abstract
The influence of sulphur on the quality and properties of steel is described. Fundamentals of sulphur behaviour in liquid iron-base alloys are developed. The effectiveness of basic, fluid slags and low oxygen potential in removal of sulphur are defined together with kinetic factors such as stirring. Control of sulphur by removal in the blast furnace or steelmaking vessel, or by intermediate ladle treatments is reviewed. Sulphide shape control at lower sulphur concentrations to improve properties is described. Processes for sulphur control are outlined.
