Abstract
Professor Geoffrey Vincent Raynor, Emeritus Professor of Physical Metallurgy in the University of Birmingham and a former Deputy Principal, died on 20 October 1983 at his home, shortly after his seventieth birthday. He played a leading part in the development of the chemistry of alloy phases, a knowledge of which is important to the design and application of alloys for modern technological use. His contributions to physical metallurgy both as a researcher and a scholar of distinction will continue to be included in the teaching of metallurgy and be of practical value for many decades to come.
