Abstract
Aluminium and its alloys have become increasingly important in various fields, and in Japan the annual consumption of aluminium ingots has already exceeded 1.6 Mt. Only a small part of this has been used for welded structures but aluminium alloys have been expanding their share as important structural materials for cryogenic storage tanks, marine vessels, rolling stock, etc., and are beginning to become established in various new fields. Al—Mg alloys have so far had the widest use in welded structures, because of their high resistivity to corrosion, good mechanical properties, and excellent weldability and machinability. In this review, types of Al-Mg alloys, welding processes, mechanical properties of welds, and typical structures which demonstrate the applications of Al—Mg alloys in Japan, are discussed.
