Abstract
The present review is intended to highlight some of the principal developments in the theory of alloys that have taken place over the past decade and to endeavour to summarize the present state of the art. It is assumed in a contribution as short as this that the reader will have some familiarity with the elements of electron-band structure theory and the notation of energy levels in terms of s, p, d, and f symmetry, with the principles of the covalent, ionic, and metallic bond, and with the fundamentals of metallurgical thermochemistry.
