Abstract
Copper and its alloys have long been associated with the sea on account of their excellent corrosion-resistance and ability to withstand marine fouling. Copper-sheathed wooden ships and gunmetals for corrosion-resistant castings are part of history but increased mechanization of naval ships has progressively led to demands for materials of higher strength and greater resistance to higher water speeds.
