Abstract
A longitudinal study was carried out on the position of the mandible and tongue at different ages.
Most of the individuals measured showed an antero-superior growth rotation of the mandible during the period studied. In the majority of cases, the tongue rotated in the same direction as the mandible, but to a greater extent.
These findings were related to measurements of the vertical position of the tongue at the ages concerned and to previous studies on the growth of the tongue and inter-maxillary space. The results were discussed in relation to functional considerations.
