Abstract
The following address was given by Professor Parkins on the occasion of the award of the EFC Medal at Eurocorr ‘96 and acknowledges the significant contribution to his work of many colleagues. In choosing a topic for discussion, Professor Parkins was conscious of the fact that the EFC Medal is intended to recognise contributions to the application of corrosion science in engineering. Rather than reviewing aspects of his earlier work, Professor Parkins decided that it might be more useful to discuss some matters with an engineering bias that have recently occupied his time.
