Abstract
Electrochemical techniques have been used to study the inhibiting properties for carbon steel in neutral aqueous solutions of a series of organic compounds with a quinonoid structure and varying oxidising and adsorption properties. In sodium sulphate solutions the oxidising properties control the inhibition, whereas in sodium chloride and hydroxide solutions and in an artificial cooling water adsorption effects predominate. Adsorption is facilitated by the presence of n electron systems and conjugated bonds in the molecules, as well as by increase in molecular size.
