The natural dextran was electrodeposited on the surface of stainless steel (SS) for improving the properties of corrosion resistance and hemocompatibility for the biomedical applications. Dextran–salicylate was synthesised by grafting electro polymerisable salicylate onto dextran by transesterification for the electrodeposition. 1H NMR spectrum was used to determine the structure of the dextran–salicylate and its degree of substitution. The comparisons of surface properties of the SS before and after dextran modification were performed by FTIR, Tafel plots and EIS technologies, respectively. The hemocompatibility of virgin and dextran modified stainless steel was evaluated by BSA adsorption and platelet adhesion.
