Ferritic nitrocarburising was one of the main fields of interest for Professor Tom Bell. Working together for 35 years on joint research projects aimed at elucidating different aspects of nitriding and nitrocarburising processes. This article presents a few interesting aspects of plasma nitrocarburising plain carbon and low alloy steels, and also deals briefly with the role of oxygen in the process.
