Abstract
Twin electrode TIG (T-TIG) welding is a new method, which woks with two electrodes insulated from each other in a welding torch. In the present study, the T-TIG welding system was established. Then the force and heat effects of T-TIG coupling arc were analysed by measuring arc pressure and arc static voltage–ampere characteristic respectively. After that, high speed thin plate and high deposition grooved thick plate welding experiments were carried out with both T-TIG and conventional TIG welding methods. The results show that with similar arc heat input, the T-TIG coupling arc has much lower arc pressure than TIG single arc. The characteristic makes T-TIG welding suitable for high efficiency welding on the basis of maintaining the original advantages of TIG welding.
