Abstract
Zinc ferrite nanopowders were prepared by a combined route of sol–gel and autoignition systhesis using a complex sol composed by Fe(NO3)3–Zn(NO3)2–citric acid–EDTA–NH4NO3–NH3.H2O as a precursor. Differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to characterise the samples. The effects of fuel ratio, calcination temperature and time on crystallinity and crystal diameter of as prepared powders were investigated. It was found that adding an assistant complex reagent such as EDTA was crucial to stabilise composition, promote uniformity of the precursor gel and prepare ZnFe2O4 nanopowders without impurity phases. The well crystallised ZnFe2O4 powders with an average crystal diameter of 13·6 nm were prepared at the optimum conditions.
