Abstract
The continued development and growth of the rigid PVC market remains a focal point for all suppliers to this industry. There are major reformulation opportunities inspired through legislation on stabilisers and other additives. Suppliers to the industry find here the inspiration to innovate constantly in order to preserve and grow their market position and share and follow these technical developments in this dynamic market place. The purpose of the present study is to (i) review the process for the production of synthetic calcium carbonate (PCC) within both the sub micrometre and nano size region, (ii) show why these products should be considered as additives to improve processing behaviour and mechanical properties and (iii) propose some formulation options to utilise these properties for improved and more cost efficient formulations in a range of rigid PVC applications. The present study will also include references to and examples of the synergistic interactions of these synthetic calcium carbonates with other additives included in the formulations and also indicate some areas for future development.
