Abstract
The behaviour of ferrite in high manganese steel at high strain rates was investigated. The results show that the hard ferrite exhibited excellent plasticity and did not affect the steel's performance at high strain rates. Depending on the isolated ferrite grains, the microstructural and microtextural evolutions during adiabatic shear band (ASB) formation were reflected intuitively. In terms of microstructure, the subgrains and dynamically recrystallised grains formed in turn; the misorientation increased, while the orientation gradient initially increased and subsequently decreased. The microtexture within ASBs formed gradually, and the initial orientation significantly influenced its formation.
