Abstract
Coatings containing nickel aluminide were fabricated on Al alloy 2024 by laser alloying with pure Ni powder. Microstructure images illustrated that the coatings are free from cracks and pores and metallurgically bonded to substrate. Test results showed that the coatings have a microhardness of about 600 HV0·2 and the wear resistance is four times higher than that of the substrate. Laser processing parameters, especially power output and scanning speed, affect coating's quality significantly. Qualified coatings can be produced with a set of parameters of power output of 800 W, scanning speed of 8 mm s−1, beam size of 1·5 mm and overlap rate of 30%.
