Abstract
β-FeOOH particles were prepared by forced hydrolysis of FeCl3·6H2O in microemulsion containing polyoxyethylene nonylphenylether (NP-4), octane and water. The samples were characterised using XRD and TEM. The effects of the molar ratio of water to NP-4 R, initial Fe3+ concentration and pH of the system on the morphology and size of the nanoparticles are discussed. The results show that the acidity and size of ‘water pool’ and the initial Fe3+ concentration are the main factors that affect the morphology of β-FeOOH particles. It is found that the optimum conditions for synthesising acicular β-FeOOH is R=6·0, [Fe3+]=0·02 mol L−1 within the pH range 1·6–2·0. The crystal structure of as synthesised acicular β-FeOOH belongs to the monoclinic system with lattice parameters a=0·9981 nm, b=0·2948 nm, c=1·0485 nm, β=92·26°.
