The dilatation characteristics of MgxLiyAl(x=4, 8, 10, 12 and y=0, 3 wt-%) alloys were studied in the temperature range from 20°C to 380°C. The elastic–plastic mechanism of the release of thermal strains during heating is discussed. Aluminium affects only marginally the value of the coefficient of thermal expansion of Mg–Li alloys.
