A new pickling method that reduces the metal oxide on steel strip using H2 has been studied through an extensive campaign of experimental tests. The process, referred to as 'acid free pickling', is environmentally friendly and does not use acid. It is most suitable for application to hot rolled low carbon steel strip. Experimental studies are in progress to validate the application of hydrogen on different metals.
