Abstract
Recent developments in electric arc furnace (EAF) based meltshop operation are reviewed, including the Consteel system which facilitates continuous scrap charging and preheating completed by hot metal charging. The benefits offered by these developments are quantified, backed by operational performance results from several facilities. The future will see increasing use of EAFs to produce high quality steels, often in innovative operational combinations alongside the blast furnace route.
