Abstract
This paper describes sonographic evaluation of the thyroid gland, explaining normal sonographic appearances and illustrating the sonographic features of benign and malignant thyroid gland pathology. Sonographic appearances that may allow differentiation of benign from malignant thyroid nodules are highlighted and the role of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and other imaging techniques in the management of patients with thyroid pathology is included. This paper will be of particular interest to student and novice practitioners in ultrasound.
