Abstract
Good quality vascular access is essential to ensure successful haemodialysis. Ultrasound is effective in selecting vessels suitable for formation of permanent haemodialysis access. Post-operatively ultrasound is useful in identifying causes of access failure or poor performance. This review includes anatomic and haemodynamic parameters for pre-operative assessment and discusses the use of volume flow and conventional B-mode and Doppler ultrasound in the investigation of dialysis access. Protocols for these investigations are suggested.
