Abstract
Dielectric spectra of a fibre-reinforced composite during processing (isothermal heating) have been modelled by the finite element method (FEM). The composite consists initially of a periodic array of parallel continuous cylindrical fibres distributed in a matrix. During processing, the fibres are supposed to be progressively distorted, broken up and converted to inclusions of spheroidal form. The dielectric spectra calculated by FEM are compared with the predictions of three chosen dielectric mixture formulae. The comparison shows that dielectric spectra of the composite cannot be fitted by a single mixture formula for all volume fractions of fibres.
