Abstract
Suspensions were prepared with mixtures of quartz and clay in different states of deflocculation, with correspondingly very different rheological behaviour (plastic, shear thinning, and Newtonian). At moderate and high shear rates, the ratio of suspension viscosity/viscosity of the exclusively colloidal suspension is confirmed to be independent of the rheological behaviour of the exclusively colloidal suspension and of shear rate in the studied suspension. A correlation has been derived between the test volume fraction and the ratio of suspension viscosity/viscosity of the exclusively colloidal suspension. It has been verified that adding quartz to an exclusively colloidal suspension has a similar effect on suspension viscosity to that of adding solids to a liquid.
