Abstract
To deal adequately with the present techniques in the hot rolling of rounds and small shapes would require a book to itself; in limiting the field for a review of this nature it is therefore desirable to study first the importance of each of the various aspects. Fig. 1 shows the annual production of various types of rolled-steel products within the United Kingdom over the last 20 years. The rapid ascendancy of flat rolled material is apparent and seems likely to continue; perhaps eventually it will influence the development of light rolled sections, since many of these can be cold formed from strip with advantage in weight and appearance. The steel tube presents the simplest and commonest example.
