Abstract
Concerned with the challenges facing the civilisation of Upper Silesia, the present paper addresses several complementary, although asymmetric, issues: ecology, society, culture and economy. The problematic region of both Poland and Europe is undergoing an unavoidable and radical economic transformation which in turn, radically affects the political and social structures. It is thought that successful transformation in Upper Silesia will contribute to more successful reform in Poland generally.
