Abstract
Conveyor belts are used throughout the world for the economical transportation of materials with many users being unaware of the belt's actual composition or construction. This paper looks at the types of conveyor belt in use today, the reasons for their selection, and examines the options available to manufacturers in terms of materials and constructions for the maximisation of properties. The part played by national and international standardisation is discussed and reference made to a new British Standard BS 8407 which specifies both static and dynamic properties for mechanical and spliced (vulcanised) joints. The UK approach to underground safety is described and factors listed which can substantially affect economic belt life.
