Abstract
The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases represent a bold new attempt to harness scientific resources on a global scale to deal with the continuing challenge posed by tropical parasitic diseases. Through the financial resources made available by the sponsoring agencies, the World Health Organization the World Bank the United Nations Development Programme, and the generous donations from a number of governments and philanthropic foundations together with contributions in kind by institutions in endemic and non-endemic countries, the Programme is steadily gaining momentum. It is here described and it is hoped that this intensive interdisciplinary effort will produce results which would otherwise not have been attained through the traditional isolated and disjointed approach to such problems.
