Abstract
Some of the highlights and disappointment in low-temperature physics and technology are presented. Emphasis is on concepts and trends rather than on rigorous and complete treatment. Cooling methods and the properties of matter at low temperature are discussed, both from a purely scientific and an applied point of view, with some emphasis on superconductivity.
