Abstract
This has been a year of celebrations as all over the world the bicentenary of the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen has been celebrated with publications, exhibitions, conferences, performances and events of every kind. Many a fresh light has been shed on the life and work of the poet. In the following I do not pretend to add significant new knowledge in this field of scholarship. I aim simply to call attention to what might be called ‘the interdisciplinary Andersen’, exemplified in the poet's interaction with one of his closest friends, the scientist Hans Christian Ørsted.
